Habitat for Humanity
of Greater Columbus

This album provides a photo journey of the construction of two homes built in 2009 in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Columbus. Volunteers in mission worked side by side to provide affordable housing for two economically disadvantaged families. The following churches contributed to this effort: Hilliard United Methodist, Indian Run United Methodist, Linworth United Methodist, St. Brendan Catholic, St. James Lutheran, and Scioto Ridge United Methodist. We thank these churches and their volunteers! We also thank the students of Ohio State University who joined us in building these homes this year.

Project history and links to past photos are archived below the photos on this page. The photos below are from Sunday, November 15th when the two homes were dedicated, and the keys were turned over to the two proud homeowner families.

Project history:

  • June 2008 - Secured pledges totaling $57,500 and submitted application for a new build with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Columbus.
  • July 2008 - Advised by HFH-GC that they were expediting the assignment of a family for a new home build in 2008.
  • August 21, 2008 - Advised by HFH-GC that we could not begin a build, best case, until October due to unforeseen circumstances.
  • September 8, 2008 - Confirmed with the Hilliard Adopt-A-House Board that October was too late to start a home and expect to get it under roof in good weather. Decided to defer this build to 2009 and plan to build two homes in 2009.
  • February 2, 2009 - Confirmed with the Hilliard Adopt-A-House Board that we secured pledges totaling enough for two builds in 2009.
  • March 9, 2009 - HFH-GC confirms assignment of builds for the Fuller and Whitney families on side-by-side lots on Bellevue Avenue to be built concurrently.
  • April 4, 2009 - HFH-GC confirms receipt of application for second 2009 build.
  • April 24, 2009 - The empty lots.
  • April 29, 2009 - Both holes dug and ready for footings.
  • May 5, 2009 - Forms for the basement walls are erected.
  • May 6, 2009 - Pre-construction meeting at HFH-GC.
  • May 13, 2009 - Installed sill plates and marked floor truss layout at 807 Bellevue.
  • May 16, 2009 - Put up the floor trusses and began to lay the deck on both homes.
  • May 20, 2009 - Completed the floor trusses and blocking, finished laying the decking, marked the exterior wall layout on one deck, laid out a half-dozen plates, prepped four window headers, and built two walls.
  • May 23, 2009 - Built and raised first floor exterior walls on both homes
  • May 27, 2009 - Built and raised the remaining interior walls, put on the cap plates and raised the second level floor trusses at 807 Bellevue.
  • May 30, 2009 - Built and raised the remaining walls and began to put on the cap plates at 801 Bellevue.
  • June 3, 2009 - Put on cap plates at 801 Bellevue and laid most of the deck at 807 Bellevue before the rain came in.
  • June 5, 2009 - Moved/added studs to line up with floor joists on three exterior walls and one load-bearing interior wall at 801 Bellevue.
  • June 6, 2009 - Held the Threshold Ceremony for both homes, raised the second floor trusses and laid decking at 801 Bellevue and finished second floor decking and built and raised five wall sections at 807 Bellevue.
  • June 10, 2009 - Laid decking at 801 Bellevue and built and raised the rear wall sections at 807 Bellevue before the rain came in.
  • June 13, 2009 - Built and raised two walls and built and assembled door frames at 801 Bellevue; built and raised the remaining exterior wall sections, built and raised some interior walls and almost finished the exterior sheathing at 807 Bellevue.
  • June 17, 2009 - Built and raised the remaining second floor exterior walls at 801 Bellevue.
  • June 20, 2009 - Built and raised most of the second floor interior walls, completed fill-in of wall sheathing, and built the basement floor stair landing at 801 and completed the second floor interior walls and installed the basement stairs at 807.
  • June 24, 2009 - Built and raised porch beams and cut and nailed insulation board to exterior walls.
  • June 27, 2009 - Completed the second floor walls, continued with applying insulation boards, and completed stairway landings on both houses, built and installed porch beams at 801, and began porch trusses at 807.
  • July 1, 2009 - Nothing but rain.
  • July 8, 2009 - Installed stairs, prepared trusses and hung insulation board.
  • July 9, 2009 - Prepared trusses and hung insulation board.
  • July 11, 2009 - Raised trusses until the rain came.
  • July 15, 2009 - Completed truss raising and hung insulation board.
  • July 18, 2009 - Hung insulation board, installed fascia boards, raised pump jacks and began roof sheathing.
  • July 22, 2009 - Hung insulation board and continued roof sheathing before the rain came in.
  • July 25, 2009 - Hung insulation board, raised pump jacks and continued roof sheathing before the rain came in.
  • July 29, 2009 - Removed the original coat closet, built and raised the new coat closet walls, built a new support header for the second floor wall above the base of the stairs, built a new support deck for the new stairs, built a 2x6 half wall in the half bath, and continued roof sheathing.
  • August 1, 2009 - Completed the roof sheathing, completed the insulation board, installed the exterior doors and locks, installed the windows, and put insulation depth markers in the attic space.
  • August 4, 2009 - Put up the returns at 807.
  • August 5, 2009 - Put up the returns on 801, re-aligned steps in 801, put up soffit and fascia aluminum on one long run of each home, put in baseboard, curtain rod & drywall deadwood, put up gable bracing in 801, framed attic access openings, swapped two windows in 801, completed hurricane clip installation, built the paired walls to put next to the new staircase in 807, trimmed out the porch roof ends, and started baffle installation.
  • August 8, 2009 - Replaced the main stairs in 807, put up the triple staircase wall in 807, swapped the upstairs and downstairs double window in 807, cleaned the homes and caulked the floor seams, continued soffits, put up vinyl corner posts, J-channel & p-channel, and began hanging vinyl siding.
  • August 12, 2009 - Added three false walls in 801, corrected some baffles in 807, re-worked some dead wood, cleaned out the houses, hung more vinyl corner posts, J-strips and vinyl siding.
  • August 15, 2009 - Finished siding on both sides of 807, finished front porch soffit, removed errant soffit and fascia aluminum on 801, reworked walls for ductwork in 801, and built half wall in 801 stairwell.
  • August 19, 2009 - Continued siding and soffits on 807 and completed most of the insulation on 807.
  • August 22, 2009 - Completed about 90% of the insulation on both homes, finished siding the rear of 807, hung soffit on 801, and cleaned out both homes.
  • August 26, 2009 - Completed insulating the living areas in both homes, hung the scalloped siding on the gable of 807, and replaced some baffles.
  • August 29, 2009 - Completed vinyl siding and fascia aluminum on 807 and continued vinyl siding and fascia aluminum on 801.
  • September 2, 2009 - Continued vinyl siding and fascia aluminum on 801, added dead wood in 807, and began basement insulation in both homes.
  • September 10, 2009 - Installed the basement windows, continued vinyl siding and soffits on 801, and hung about three-quarters of the drywall in 807.
  • September 12, 2009 - Finished the vinyl siding and soffit on 801, continued fascia aluminum on 801 and continued hanging drywall in 807.
  • September 16, 2009 - Finished hanging drywall and QA'ed the screw depth on 807, put up the last two pieces of vinyl siding behind the electrical feed on 801 and began hanging drywall in 801.
  • September 19, 2009 - Continued hanging drywall in 801, finished fascia aluminum on 801 and cleaned out both houses.
  • September 23, 2009 - Erected basement shelving and continued hanging drywall in 801.
  • September 26, 2009 - Completed hanging drywall in 801, put insulation board waste in the attic area, prepared porch post wraps, did final sanding of drywall finishing in 807, primed 807 interior walls, and got muddy.
  • September 30, 2009 - Put on a full first coat of interior paint in 807, patched dozens of drywall finishing errors in 807, did cut-in for the second coat in 807, and helped HFH-GC staff load unused vinyl siding and aluminum out of the mobile mini.
  • October 3, 2009 - Sanded the drywall fixes/skimcoat in 807, primed those areas, put the second coat of paint in 807, wrapped the porch posts of both homes, erected basement shelves in 807, sprayed foam insulation in 807, began to lay luan in the kitchen area of 807, put shutters on the front windows of both homes, put gutter guard on both homes (except the front porch of 801), cleaned 801 and 807, moved personal items out of the mobile mini, and moved the painting supplies from 807 to 801.
  • October 7, 2009 - Primed and painted the first coat on the interior walls in 801, corrected some vinyl siding on 801, finished the luan in 807, made patterns for the linoleum in 807, laid the kitchen and half bath linoleum in 807, and blew in attic insulation in 807.
  • October 10, 2009 - Sanded the patched drywall anomalies in 801, primed those areas, painted the second coat of interior paint in 801, laid linoleum in the full bathroom in 807, installed most of the kitchen cabinets in 807, prepped for windows sills, and distributed all materials from the mobile mini's to the two homes.
  • October 14, 2009 - Cut in a third coat of paint in 801, started installing window sills, completed cabinetry installation in 807, put together the trusses for one of the sheds, touched up the ceilings in both homes, hung all of the interior doors on the first floor of 807, and laid out the cabinets in 801.
  • October 17, 2009 - Put a first coat of paint on the porch rails that Grant made off site, hung cabinets in 801, blew insulation in 801, continued hanging interior doors in both houses, began trim work, and began construction of the two storage sheds.
  • October 21, 2009 - Continued trim work, installed interior door knobs, and continued painting porch railings.
  • October 24, 2009 - Continued with installing cabinets, trimming porch posts, hanging doors, installing door knobs, doing trimwork, installing bathroom accessories, and installing porch rails.
  • October 28, 2009 - Continued with trimwork, hung more interior doors, installed bathroom accessories, sanded and stained interior stair rails and sides of stairways, and began raising one of the storage sheds.
  • October 31, 2009 - Continued with trimwork, replaced the front door jamb in 807, installed the half wall cap in 807, installed the cabinet island in 801, stained the stairway sides in 801, installed more bathroom accessories, installed the main stair railing in 807, installed kitchen vent hoods in both homes, finished installed closet shelving, and did general clean-up in both homes.
  • November 4, 2009 - Completed trimwork in 807, continued with trimwork in 801, continued construction of the storage shed for 807, installed the basement railing in 807, painted the porch posts, stained the half wall cap in 807, puttied trimwork nail holes, caulked window sills and kitchen countertop, replaced the vinyl siding which had been removed to pour the rear steps, installed kick boards for all exterior doors, swept off the driveway and sidewalks onto which top soil had been slung, and did general clean-up in both homes.
  • November 7, 2009 - Completed trim work in 807 and continued trim work in 801, assembled the storage shed for 801, hung most of the bedroom window blinds, erected both mailboxes, built the rear step railings for 807, installed the remaining porch railings, routed and mounted the wall caps in 801, puttied trim work, mulched the shrubs, cleaned windows, leveled the top soil and spread grass seed, painted the gas lines, stained and applied polyurethane in 807, hung the house numbers, cleaned the bath tubs, cleaned the floors in 807 in preparation for carpet, and did general clean-up.
  • November 10, 2009 - Continued trim work in 801, replaced a broken window in 801, shingled both storage sheds, hung the doors on one storage shed, completed railings in 801, stained the half wall caps in 801, painted the rear step railings for 807, vacuumed 807 and laid carpet protector down, applied polyurethane, and did general clean-up in 801.
  • November 12, 2009 - Finished the second storage shed, finished trim work in 801, sanded and cleaned floors in 801 in prep for carpet, installed remaining window blinds, trimmed the bottom of closet doors for 807 and coat closet of 801 to fit, continued polyurethane application, patched wall dings, cleaned windows, trimmed out 801's porch exposures of OSB and blueboard, installed J-channel on 801 rear porch and replaced vinyl siding, puttied porch railings and brick mold, blew dirt off porches, driveways and sidewalks, and cleaned up some of the electrician's mess.
  • November 14, 2009 - Trimmed the bottom of bedroom closet doors for 801 to fit, completed polyurethane applications, sanded and painted wall dings, vacuumed carpets in 801 and put down carpet protector, sanded and painted porch railings and exterior door brick mold, caulked kitchen and vanity countertops, wiped down walls and doors, cleand sinks and countertops, set stepping stones from back steps to storage sheds, completed basement insulation tasks around the plumber's and electrician's work, powerwashed driveways, sidewalks, porches and siding, and did general clean up in preparation for home dedications.
  • November 15, 2009 - Home dedications.
  • November 17, 2009 - Sanded and put first coat of paint on basement stairs in 807.
  • November 18, 2009 - Began addressing punch list and completed painting basement stairs in both homes.
  • November 19, 2009 - Continued addressing punch list items.
