Habitat for Humanity
of Mid-Ohio

In February and March of 2023 Hilliard Adopt-A-House considered various rehabilitation options with Habitat for Humanity MidOhio. In March we visited the 1461 Genessee Avenue property. We began gutting the interior of the home in April.

The photos below are from Wednesday, April 10, 2024 when we dug concrete and bricks out of the backyard near the back gate, garden raked all of the soil and dirt, spread grass seed, raked grass seed into the soil and dirt, laid the stepping stones from the garage parking pad to the back porch, and blew out the garage interior as well as the parking pad and front sidewalk.

Project history:

  • March 18, 2023 - Visited the Genessee Avenue property.
  • April 12, 2023 - Began gutting the house. We completed two bedrooms, started on a third bedroom, gutted about half of the living room, removed the two main level doors and installed Lexan with locks, removed the hot water heater and some basement storage shelves and removed the kitchen cabinets.
  • April 19, 2023 - Finished gutting three bedrooms and closets, gutted more of the living room, cut the plaster and lathe above the trim boards in the stairway, began gutting the stairway, removed the washer, dryer and furnace, and removed a lot of piping and ductwork from the basement.
  • April 22, 2023 - Finished gutting the upstairs stairwell and dining room and gutted about two-thirds of the room at the top of the basement stairwell.
  • April 26, 2023 - Finished removing the lathe and plaster on the first and second floors of the house, removed the bathtub, removed the piping in the bathroom, removed the closet in the middle east room on the first floor, and removed the wall between the two middle rooms on the first floor.
  • April 29, 2023 - Finished removing all lathe and plaster in the house, removed the plaster on the rear of the chimney in the kitchen/dining area to create an accent wall, removed the basement shelving under the front porch, removed the storage cabinets under the basement stairs, removed the basement stairs, removed the storage box from the north bedroom closet, took down the upstairs hallway wall which requires reframing and repositioning, and nearly filled the empty dumpster again.
  • May 3, 2023 - Removed the protruding nails from the ceiling joists and studs, removed exterior and interior electrical items, repaired three stairwell treads, removed most of the loose floor tiles as well as some not so loose, set two floor trusses for the upstairs bathroom, laid OSB in the upstairs bathroom to address its safety hazard, set two floor trusses for the original kitchen, sistered the band board below the kitchen, laid OSB in the kitchen to address its safety hazard, addressed the safety hazard in the floor of the new kitchen area where the wall was removed, cut the stump lower, and swept and vacuumed the house throughout.
  • June 24, 2023 - Re-framed the front wall for a new exterior door, re-framed the living room window opening, sistered all but one 2x8 ceiling joist in the kitchen area, added a 2x6 door header over the opening from the living room to the kitchen, scraped a lot of floor tile off the floor in the living room and kitchen area, moved the wall in the downstairs bedroom, replaced weakened and register floor areas in the middle room upstairs, and removed old window frames for the windows at the base of the stairs and the upstairs front bedroom.
  • June 28, 2023 - Re-framed the first floor stairway window opening, sistered more 2x8 ceiling joists in the kitchen area, added double joist hangers to ceiling joists where needed, scraped a lot more floor tile off the floor in the living room and kitchen area, shortened the wall in the downstairs bedroom, replaced more weakened and register floor areas, relocated the lumber to the living room and laid out the long kitchen wall which has the doors for the coat closet, pantry and laundry area.
  • July 1, 2023 - Built the exterior walls to replace the southeast corner of the first floor, built and raised a temporary brace wall to support the southeast corner while the replacement is underway, removed the side porch roof, built the interior walls for the pantry, coat closet and laundry room, adjusted the width of the front door opening, and re-framed the north window openings of the second floor.
  • July 5, 2023 - Removed the gutter and fascia from the south and east mini-roofs, removed the south and east wall of the former kitchen, removed and replaced the rotten band board and sill plate, raised two new exterior walls for the southeast corner of the house, removed one downstairs west window and two upstairs west windows, framed in those three west windows, and put temporary OSB over the exposed southeast corner of the house.
  • July 8, 2023 - Sistered the remaining ceiling joists in the kitchen and dining area, moved the rear pantry and coat closet wall to make the hallway wider, installed 1/4 inch plywood over the two new exterior walls on the southeast corner, installed 3/4 inch OSB over the new south exterior wall on the southeast corner, removed the mini-roofs between the first and second floor on the southwest sides, built and installed the stringers for the basement stairs, finished framing and installing OSB to eliminate two upstairs bedroom windows, and moved the temporary support wall in the former kitchen to provide temporary support for re-framing the header from the former kitchen to the new dining area.
  • July 12, 2023 - Consulted with Andrew and Erik on a number of rebuilding challenges, positioned and built temporary support walls and built and raised the wall between the rear foyer and the laundry/kitchen area, finished the exterior sheathing for the rebuilt southeast corner of the first floor walls, addressed the soffit issues above two second floor west windows, reframed the window opening at the top of the stairs for a new window, removed the mini-roof extensions on the south wall, sheathed the area between the first and second floor on the south wall, and sheathed the eliminated window opening in the new kitchen.
  • July 15, 2023 - Re-cut the basement stair stringers, screwed on the basement stair treads, built and raised the interior wall next to the basement stairs, finished the wall between the rear foyer and the kitchen area, built and raised most of the new wall between the first floor bedroom and kitchen area, removed the triple window on the west side of the first floor bedroom, added studs to carry the load, installed OSB over the triple window opening, and added more load bearing support to the window headers for the upstairs north windows.
  • July 19, 2023 - Finished the wall between the first floor bedroom and the kitchen area, finished adding load bearing support to the window headers for the upstairs north windows, added 1/4 inch plywood to several window openings, caulked many exterior seams around OSB and plywood for window openings, installed quarter-round to support three weakened step treads, removed the window frame in the upstairs bathroom, removed the small roof over the basement entry door and removed unneeded studs for the upstairs middle bedroom closet.
  • July 22, 2023 - Cut, bent and installed fascia aluminum on the return above the back porch and on the south fascia of the kitchen roof, completed the east support wall for the basement stairs, built and raised the 2x6 first floor bathroom wall, the wall separating the first floor closet from the bathroom, and the wall with the first floor closet door and first floor bathroom wall, added load-bearing support for the window at the top of the stairs, built and raised three of four closet walls for the upstairs middle bedroom closet and built its fourth wall.
  • July 26, 2023 - Added more load-bearing support for two upstairs windows, planed and sanded the long bump in the floor in the upstairs middle bedroom, raised the fourth closet wall for the upstairs middle bedroom, finished caulking new OSB seams on the exterior walls, walled in the old window opening in the upstairs bathroom, removed the old window frame next to the basement stairs, removed the old window frames from the south bedroom windows and began to rebuild both walls for a standard 3x5 window.
  • July 29, 2023 - Completed framing out three window openings, continued adding 3/4 inch OSB and 1/4 plywood as needed around window openings, removed the flat metal roof over the over the back porch and original kitchen, prepped the outside rear porch truss with OSB, housewrap, 1x4 and 1x6 material, filled in blocking on the rear of the house between floors, framed the opening from the upstairs bathroom hall to the rear bedrooms hall, framed the door opening to the rear bedroom, raised the rear porch roof trusses, sheathed the rear porch roof, laid ice barrier on the rear porch roof, laid felt roofing underlayment on the rear porch roof, and installed drip edge on the rear porch roof.
  • August 2, 2023 - Cut down and cut up the tree which was partially taken down by a storm last week, moved all debris into the dumpster, shingled and installed flashing on the rear porch roof, continued adding 3/4 inch OSB and 1/4 plywood as needed around window openings, framed the upstairs rear bedroom closet door wall, adjusted the basement door wall, installed hurricane clips on the rear porch trusses, and began reframing the laundry area window opening and the upstairs middle bedroom window opening.
  • August 5, 2023 - Finished framing the laundry area window opening and the upstairs middle bedroom window opening, continued adding 3/4 inch OSB and 1/4 plywood as needed around window openings, installed the last hurricane clip on the rear porch trusses, installed a deadbolt lock on the garage person door, removed the shingles and fascia aluminum from the front porch roof, shingled half of the front porch roof, framed the linen closet, framed the upstairs bathroom door opening, adjusted the door opening for the upstairs rear bedroom, and built and raised the wall for the middle bedroom and hallway.
  • August 9, 2023 - Cleaned out the garage, moved the blue tool lockboxes to the garage, built and installed the exterior vent header and microwave blocking, added tub flange blocking in both bathrooms, moved and added studs to ensure 12 inch bay for shower controls in both bathrooms, added 3/4 inch OSB to the exterior of the west wall of the downstairs bedroom, completed framing and adding OSB to the front bedroom closet cubby area, framed the door openings for the upstairs front bedroom and its closet, reduced the side/rear exterior door opening for a 2-8 door, built and installed a cornice return for the south end of the back porch roof, installed OSB between the rear porch trusses, caulked more exterior seams, and continued adding 3/4 inch OSB and 1/4 plywood as needed around window openings.
  • August 12, 2023 - Completed framing the door opening for the upstairs front bedroom closet, furred out the upstairs hall wall next to the chimney, completed adding 1/4 inch plywood around window openings, insulated the exterior wall cavities that will be behind tubs, hung housewrap over that insulation, installed the north cornice return for the rear porch roof, added kitchen cabinet blocking, installed temporary handrail on stairs to second floor, built and installed the electric meter panel, installed 5/8 inch fire-rated drywall over the upstairs middle bedroom window opening, finished shingling the front porch roof, and almost completed taping window openings.
  • August 16, 2023 - Built attic access openings, installed handrail blocking to the upstairs, installed towel and toilet paper holder blocking in the upstairs bathroom, installed OSB above the inaccessible area of the upstairs stairwell ceiling and installed two windows.
  • August 19, 2023 - Planed, cut, and otherwise modified all window openings to accept the windows, installed all windows and installed Lexan protective coverings over all first floor windows.
  • August 23, 2023 - Finished taping the windows, adjusted a couple of window braces with the Lexan, began putting housewrap on the east and south side of the house, and began hanging 5/8 inch fire-rated drywall to the exterior of the west wall.
  • August 26, 2023 - Moved the bathtubs and tub panels into both bathrooms, installed F-channel and soffit on the south end of the kitchen jut-out roof, finished hanging 5/8 inch fire-rated drywall on the exterior of the west wall, continued putting housewrap on the house, and addressed a few miscellaneous framing issues inside the house.
  • August 30, 2023 - Completed adjusting the Lexan braces on the first floor windows, finished wrapping the house, began hanging vinyl corner posts and vinyl starter strips, and put J-channel around the electric meter mounting panel.
  • September 2, 2023 - Installed the rear exterior door, repaired the floor at the front exterior door entrance, added drywall deadwood in many areas of the house, completed framing the wall to the left of the upstairs front bedroom entrance, and continued hanging vinyl corner posts.
  • September 6, 2023 - Installed the front exterior door, completed hanging outside vinyl corner posts, mounted the front and rear gable vents, mounted half of the J-blocks for vinyl siding, adjusted two bathroom wall sections by one-quarter inch to accommodate the four piece tub assembly, widened the door opening to the basement to accommodate a larger door than originally planned, and began prepping the area above the rear porch for soffit.
  • September 9, 2023 - Continued preparation for soffit above the rear porch and completed vinyl siding on the west wall.
  • September 11, 2023 - Corrected the placement of the rear exterior door.
  • September 13, 2023 - Continued preparation for soffit above the rear porch, completed about half of the vinyl siding on the south wall, completed J-blocks for vinyl siding on the north and east walls, finished inside vinyl corner posts, began putting starter strip and J-channel around the rear porch area, and began hanging vinyl siding near the rear porch.
  • September 20, 2023 - Hung more vinyl siding on the south wall, hung three rows of siding on the east wall, completed J-channel around the rear porch area, and hung more vinyl siding near the rear porch.
  • September 23, 2023 - Held our official commencement ceremony, enjoyed special treats courtesy of Helen, finished the vinyl siding on the south wall, prepped the area above the rear porch for siding, finished vinyl siding around the rear porch door, and hung vinyl siding on close to half of the east wall.
  • September 27, 2023 - Removed the boards beneath the cantilevered kitchen area for HVAC access, insulated behind the HVAC runs in the living room and the upstairs front bedroom, built and raised 2x6 walls in the west ends of the living room and the upstairs front bedroom to enclose the HVAC runs, built 2x4 support above the rear porch for soffit and light fixture installation, continued hanging vinyl siding on the east wall, completed vinyl siding above the rear porch (except for that portion to be performed by a Habitat contractor), built and installed laundry room soffits, built a chase around the HVAC runs in the kitchen, and removed the side railings on the front porch.
  • September 30, 2023 - Almost finished hanging vinyl siding on the east wall, installed the attic fan, prepped the garage for mounting its light, put fascia aluminum on the rear of the back porch, removed the moulding from the front porch gable, cut off the protruding board on the front porch gable, cut wide SmartTrim boards to fit over the front porch beams, finished J-channels for front porch, and began hanging vinyl siding on the front of the house.
  • October 4, 2023 - Finished hanging vinyl siding on the east wall, put fascia aluminum on the front porch, removed the moulding from the house gable, painted wide SmartTrim boards for the front porch beams, finished hanging vinyl siding on the front porch, scraped wallpaper off sheetrock over chimney, installed J-channel above porch and on house gable, installed frieze board on house gable, began removing old paint from the porch columns, and began hanging shake vinyl siding on house gable.
  • October 7, 2023 - Continued removing old paint from the porch columns, installed wide SmartTrim boards on the sides of the porch beams, cut bottom SmartTrim boards for the front porch beams, painted bottom SmartTrim boards for the front porch beams, cut and painted SmartTrim boards for putting beneath both exterior doors, installed J-channel on the porch gable, finished hanging shake vinyl siding on the house gable and the porch gable and began hanging vinyl siding above the porch roof.
  • October 11, 2023 - Continued removing old paint from the porch columns, added cat walks on the upstairs ceiling joists, put the second coat of paint on the SmartTrim boards for putting beneath both exterior doors and the porch beams, finished hanging vinyl siding on the house, repaired a number of flooring issues, sistered a ceiling joist in the upstairs front bedroom and did about 90% of the air sealing with rock wool and fire-rated insulating spray foam.
  • October 14, 2023 - Moved our trash into the dumpster, completed the air sealing with rock wool and fire-rated insulating spray foam, installed the SmartTrim boards beneath both exterior doors and the porch beams, installed deadwood for bath accessories in the first floor bathroom, began work on the metal to seal the chimney opening, added roof support boards for two areas above the upstairs bathroom, installed deadwood for baseboard on inside corners, installed deadwood for the basement step railing, cleaned out the garage attic, moved all unusable materials from the garage to the dumpster, and did a number of other miscellaneous items.
  • October 18, 2023 - Installed two 12-inch framing straps to the double top plate in the first floor bathroom exterior wall, replaced the top 1x3 where it was cut by the HVAC installer to be one continuous piece below the floor joists, and installed wall insulation throughout the house.
  • October 21, 2023 - Installed a doorbell mounting block and hung ceiling drywall above the rear foyer, above the downstairs bathroom and in all of the upstairs except for half of the front bedroom and its closet.
  • October 25, 2023 - Finished hanging ceiling drywall on the second floor, blew insulation above the rear entry and first floor bathroom, blew insulation in the attic areas, hung ceiling drywall in the first floor bedroom, kitchen and dining area, and part of the hallway to the basement, finished wall drywall in the upstairs rear bedroom closet, and hung three-quarters of the wall drywall in the upstairs rear bedroom.
  • October 28, 2023 - Hung the rear porch soffit, installed the rear porch fascia aluminum and continued hanging drywall in the house.
  • November 1, 2023 - Continued hanging drywall in the house.
  • November 4, 2023 - Continued hanging drywall in the house.
  • November 8, 2023 - Finished hanging drywall on the second floor and both stairwells and continued hanging drywall on the first floor.
  • November 11, 2023 - Finished hanging drywall, QA'ed the setting of drywall screws, sealed off the fireplace opening on the inside, cut and put a first coat of paint on the exterior plywood for the kitchen jut-out, installed nailers for the kitchen jut-out, sanded the porch columns, put one coat of paint on one of the porch columns and cleared out the house for the professional drywall finishers.
  • November 15, 2023 - Put a second coat of paint on the exterior plywood, scraped the basement walls, vacuumed the basement walls, truss cavities and floor, installed insulation beneath the kitchen jut-out, finished two coats of paint on the porch columns and center column top, cut balusters and SmartTrim for the front porch, put a first coat of paint on all balusters and half of the SmartTrim, installed the exterior plywood under the kitchen jut-out, puttied more imperfections in the porch columns and painted three of four walls in the rear basement room.
  • November 18, 2023 - Cut more porch balusters, did more prep work for the porch railings, dug 3 1/4 of the 5 post holes for the front and rear porch, continued painting balusters and SmartTrim for the porch railings, installed the house numbers on the front porch beam, and continued painting basement walls.
  • November 21, 2023 - Continued painting balusters and SmartTrim for the porch railings, continued painting basement walls and installed the front porch railings.
  • November 29, 2023 - Wiped down all of the walls, vacuumed the upstairs, cut more SmartTrim, painted more balusters and SmartTrim, began trimming the front porch columns, installed a temporary adjustable thermostat, cement caulked gaps in the basement walls, continued to paint basement walls, began construction of the basement shelving unit, completed the first coat of paint on the second floor, resized the 2x4's for the Lexan on the first floor windows so that they can be properly mudded, sanded and painted, cut-in paint on about half of the first floor, repaired the original trim on the west side of the stairs, and added finishing trim for the top and bottom of the east side of the stairs.
  • December 2, 2023 - Completed the first coat of interior paint except for the main stairway walls, completed painting the basement walls, finished painting the 4x4 posts, painted the finger-grooved exterior handrails, continued trimming the front porch columns, completed construction of the basement shelving unit, moved basement materials and tools to the basement shelving unit, applied a first coat of drywall compound on windows openings where the professionals couldn't apply compound due to the 2x4's holding the Lexan, built pony wall end cap at the base of the stairs for installation at a later time, began caulking the seams and nail holes on the porch beams and railings, cut and installed 2x10 treated wood for the opening between the middle and rear basement rooms, installed the 4x4 posts for the front and rear stair railings, installed the rear porch railing, and did the second coat of cut-in paint upstairs in two bedrooms, their closets, the hallway and the linen closet.
  • December 6, 2023 - Completed painting the interior walls except for the lower part of the main stairway walls where drywall patching remains to be completed, continued patching drywall in the stairwell where it meets the stringers, completed the front and rear stair railings, discovered that two drywall screws hit a PEX line running to the upstairs bathroom, painted Kilz-2 on a portion of the fireplace and the front basement walls, caulked around the fireplace and the brick feature wall, pressure washed the house foundation walls, front porch and front steps, and laid luan in most of the kitchen/dining area.
  • December 9, 2023 - Continued patching drywall in the stairwell where it meets the stringers, finished installing trim on the porch columns, finished caulking nail holes and seams on the front and rear porch railings and beams, finished painting over caulked areas on the front and rear porch railings and beams, put a first coat of paint on about 95% of the house foundation walls, finished a first coat of paint on the interior door trim and fireplace and installed all kitchen cabinets against the west wall.
  • December 13, 2023 - Began patching the stairwell stringers, finished the second coat of paint on the interior door trim, set the kitchen island cabinets, installed the kitchen cabinet toe kicks, put a first coat of paint on four interior doors and their frames, caulked the fireplace masonry, finished laying luan on the first floor, finished applying leveler on both floors, sanded and added drywall compound around first floor window openings and began laying LVT flooring in the living room.
  • December 15, 2023 - Professionals sealed the front steps and porch.
  • December 16, 2023 - Cut the 16-foot baseboard material to appropriate rough lengths for painting, applied more caulk on the fireplace, installed the deadbolt locks for both exterior doors, continued painting interior doors, installed both bathroom vanity cabinets, recaulked and repainted areas on the porch railings, finished the first coat of paint on the house foundation walls, replaced drywall where the plumber made a repair and laid the bed coat for said repaired areas, finished the second coat of paint on the house foundation walls, filed smooth hanging drips from the front porch seal coat and continued laying LVT flooring in the living room.
  • December 18, 2023 - Applied second coat of joint compound to the repaired water line areas, sanded staircase stringers and put a first coat of wall paint above the staircase stringers.
  • December 19, 2023 - Sanded and applied another coat of joint compound to the repaired water line areas, and put a first coat of trim paint on the staircase stringers.
  • December 20, 2023 - Continued painting interior doors, applied (hopefully) the final skim coat of drywall compound on the repaired plumbing areas, sanded and put a first coat of paint on the first floor window openings, and completed laying LVT flooring in the living room.
  • December 23, 2023 - Continued painting interior doors, applied another skim coat of drywall compound on the repaired plumbing areas, laid LVT flooring in the kitchen area and into the laundry area, completed two coats of paint on all upstairs interior doors, installed doors for all three upstairs bedrooms and their closets, installed the linen closet door, installed and caulked the fireplace mantel, installed the wrap-around for both knee walls, installed the cover above the lower knee wall, and began laying LVT flooring in the upstairs bathroom.
  • December 27, 2023 - Continued painting interior doors, applied floor leveler in the laundry area, laid more LVT flooring and repaired baseboard trim in the main stairs.
  • December 30, 2023 - Almost completed painting interior doors, completed laying LVT flooring, started painting baseboard trim, cut out the weed stumps around the house foundation, cleaned those foundation wall areas, hung the upstairs bathroom door and hung the double door for the coat closet and pantry.
  • January 3, 2024 - Completed painting interior doors, completed hanging interior doors, continued painting baseboards, began installing door casing, began installing baseboards. Habitat MidOhio also brought their Dingo to dig for the conductor lines and grade part of the backyard.
  • January 4, 2024 - DAK Electric volunteers began electrical finish work.
  • January 5, 2024 - DAK Electric volunteers continued electrical finish work.
  • January 6, 2024 - Laid the conductor lines, connected all downspouts to the conductor lines, filled in soil over the conductor lines, put two coats of paint on the 45 new pieces of door casing, swept the living room and kitchen area, re-laid and taped cardboard over the LVT flooring in the living room and the kitchen area, painted a second coat on a few more baseboards, continued installing baseboards, continued installing door casing, adjusted some of the kitchen cabinet doors and adjusted one of the interior door frames.
  • January 9, 2024 - DAK Electric volunteers completed electrical work, and we finished putting the second coat of paint on all baseboards, put one coat of paint on the interior of both exterior doors, put the second coat of wall paint on the stairs' walls above the baseboards, put the second coat of paint around the first floor windows, put both cut-in coats of paint on the two repaired wall areas, rolled on the first coat of paint on the two repaired wall areas, and touched-up ceiling spots.
  • January 10, 2024 - Almost finished door casing, continued installing baseboards upstairs, demolished the fireplace hearth, built a 2x4 frame and topped it with OSB for a new fireplace hearth, installed insulation on the attic access panel, tested the thermostat-controlled attic access fan, and began caulking nail holes and seams on doors, door frames and baseboards.
  • January 13, 2024 - Finished the baseboard installation on the second floor, finished caulking nail holes upstairs, painted touch-up in the front and rear bedrooms on the second floor, installed all door hardware, installed hardibacker board for the tile installation, did some tile layout planning, added lyme to wash out the location of the old wall on the brick, sealed the brick accent wall in the kitchen, started baseboard installation in the rear bedroom on the first floor and installed the kitchen countertops.
  • January 17, 2024 - Continued baseboard installation on the first floor, continued paint touch-up on the second floor walls, completed laying tile for the fireplace hearth, continued caulking trimwork, continued painting over caulked trimwork, sanded and painted the main stair stringers, filled in a trim gap in the basement stairs and adjusted the installaton of the front exterior door.
  • January 20, 2024 - Completed all door casing, cleaned bathtubs of cardboard and debris, installed living room baseboard, grouted fireplace hearth tile, cut and painted trim for basement openings, installed trim in basement stairway, installed quarter round under kitchen cabinets, installed mounting screws on island counter, installed trim moulding on island, cut sink opening in kitchen countertop, repaired basement stairs, cleaned basement, install trim on front and rear basement openings, painted front and rear basement openings, installed insulation on basement rim board, installed cabinet pulls in kitchen and bathrooms, addressed drywall anomalies, continued caulking nail holes and seams in trim work, put second coat of paint on the interior of the two exterior doors, painted over some of the caulked trim work, installed cove moulding under the lower pony wall, installed cap plate on the upper pony wall and sanded some trimwork that had excessive caulk.
  • January 22, 2024 - Sanded trim work that had excess caulk, caulked more trim work, addressed some ceiling areas where wall roller paint got on the ceiling and touched up trim paint.
  • January 24, 2024 - Installed closet shelving in all bedrooms and the linen closet, cut, assembled and stained handrails for both stairwells, almost finished two coats of paint on both sides of the exterior doors, finished baseboard in the living room, installed both bathroom mirrors, installed transition pieces between the fireplace hearth and the LVT flooring, replaced a piece of chipped LVT flooring, installed PVC quarter-round at the base of both bath tubs, installed all bathroom accessories in the upstairs bathroom, installed all but one bath accessory in the first floor bathroom, installed vanity cabinet trim in the first floor bathroom, installed the front and rear cold air return floor vent covers, completed the basement trim, continued addressing wall anomalies and continued caulking.
  • January 27, 2024 - Moved our construction trash from the garage to the dumpster, removed the old garage vent fan, swept and vacuumed the garage, attached bathroom sink tops to the vanity cabinets, installed peep holes in both exterior doors, installed cove moulding under the upstairs knee wall cap and under the fireplace mantel, completed caulking windows, completed caulking trim work, installed trim moulding at the base of the brick feature wall, completed shelving, continued touch-up paint over caulked trim areas, continued patching drywall anomalies, completed trim on kitchen island, touched up more ceiling areas where wall paint got on the ceiling, trenched the sidewalk leading up to the house, hosed off the front porch, porch steps and sidewalk, continued painting over patched drywall, put two coats of poly on the handrails, installed the handrail brackets for both sets of stairs and began the final coat of paint on the fireplace bricks.
  • January 31, 2024 - Moved the porta-john outside the garage in prep for the new garage door installation on February 1, vacuumed most of the house, caulked the bathroom vanity tops, kitchen countertop and quarter-round in front of the bathtubs, touched up various ceiling issues, put a final coat of paint on the fireplace bricks, cleaned all ceiling fans, filled in unused post holes in yard, began repair of laundry room floor, removed cardboard floor covering from LVT flooring, emptied the mobile mini, installed and finished handrails, sealed fireplace tile, finished paint on front door, re-installed weather-stripping on exterior doors, finished caulking nail holes and seams on trim, continued addressing drywall anomalies, continued touch-up paint on walls and trim, removed some excess material from the basement, cleaned both bathrooms, and installed quarter-round at base of both exterior doors.
  • February 3, 2024 - Cut up the volunteer trees and branches from the chain link fence in the backyard and filled the dumpster, cut three tree trunks level with the ground, garden raked the dirt aside the conductor lines to pile up over the trenches, installed the dishwasher, microwave and oven, installed, caulked and painted the two baseboard pieces next to the dishwasher, finished applying silicon under J-channel on the front porch to block water into the basement, cleaned the outside of all upstairs windows, sanded and painted over patched drywall anomalies, put two coats of paint on the board above the garage door, caulked nail holes and put another coat of paint on the SmartTrim beneath both exterior doors, adjusted the latch for the front door deadbolt, sanded down the top of the basement door where it was rubbing the door frame, and installed the garage door opener keypad. Habitat MidOhio staff dug the post holes for the backyard fence.
  • February 6, 2024 - Habitat MidOhio and the "Tuesday Crew" set the fence posts and installed the fence rails.
  • February 7, 2024 - Insulated around the microwave vent opening, repaired a small flooring anomaly, applied drywall compound on a few drywall anomalies, sanded the interior stair railings and washed all window screens. Habitat MidOhio led volunteers in installing the fence gates and pickets.
  • February 9, 2024 - Re-installed the screens on the upstairs windows, caulked under baseboards where there was a noticeable gap between the baseboard and the LVT flooring, cleaned spots on the living room floor, put another coat of paint on the wood above the garage door, spray painted the garage service door, sanded and painted more drywall anomalies, puttied and sanded the brickmold on the exterior doors and applied drywall compound on more drywall dings.
  • February 14, 2024 - Caulked and re-caulked under baseboards where there was a noticeable gap between the baseboard and the LVT flooring, applied drywall compound on more drywall dings, sanded and painted more drywall anomalies, sprayed black paint behind cold air return and register covers, touched up paint on the white trim throughout, vacuumed the carpet, laid carpet protector, cleaned the kitchen and bathroom cabinets, moved all materials and tools to the living room for pick up by Habitat, and programmed the garage door opener keypad.
  • March 6, 2024 - Repaired and repainted a spot on the front porch SmartTrim, applied drywall compound on more drywall dings, sanded and painted more drywall anomalies, hung the mailbox, replaced one cracked window sash, removed Lexan and hardware from all first floor windows, cleaned all first floor windows, installed first floor window screens, installed window blinds for all windows, adjusted several window lock mechanisms, re-installed trim on the kitchen island cabinet, vacuumed and mopped LVT flooring, pressure washed front porch, front steps and sidewalk, planted five bushes in front of the front porch and spread mulch.
  • March 9, 2024 - Celebrated the dedication ceremony, gave Helen the keys to her new home and enjoyed a bountiful feast prepared by Helen.
  • April 10, 2024 - Dug concrete and bricks out of the backyard near the back gate, garden raked all of the soil and dirt, spread grass seed, raked grass seed into the soil and dirt, laid the stepping stones from the garage parking pad to the back porch, and blew out the garage interior as well as the parking pad and front sidewalk.
