Habitat for Humanity
of Mid-Ohio

In April 2024 Hilliard Adopt-A-House board members met with the prospective Habitat homeowner family to discuss construction plans for their four-bedroom, two-bathroom home on Minnesota Avenue. On May 22nd we began work on the house.

The photos below are from Wednesday, November 20, 2024 when we held the Dedication Ceremony.

Project history:

  • April 26, 2024 - Met to discuss construction plans.
  • May 2, 2024 - Visited the Minnesota property.
  • May 6, 2024 - Progress as of 2:00 p.m.; sill plates and first floor trusses in place.
  • May 7, 2024 - Progress as of 2:45 p.m.; first floor walls complete and second floor trusses going up.
  • May 8, 2024 - Progress as of 6:30 p.m.; second floor walls complete and roof complete.
  • May 10, 2024 - Progress as of 2:00 p.m.; all walls and roof sheathed and insulation board installed on all walls.
  • May 18, 2024 - Held the Commencement Ceremony.
  • May 22, 2024 - Removed insulation board from the front of the front porch beam, removed the two center front porch brackets, added 7/16 inch OSB to the back of the front porch beam, put new brackets on the front porch beam, received tools and materials from Habitat box truck, built basement shelves and stocked with tools and materials, moved gang boxes into the basement, cut insulation board for porch roof trusses and for the attic wall above master bedroom/laundry closet, installed string lights in basement and first floor, wet-vacuumed and cleaned basement floor, built MEP platform for basement, installed Lexan over all first floor windows and exterior doors, built knee wall at top of the stairs and began knee wall coming down the stairs, filled in door headers with OSB on primary bedroom doorway, primary bedroom closet doorway and laundry closet doorway, filled in stairwell window header with OSB and 2x12, put in new support for the stair landing, stabilized the pantry door opening, removed old support for the stair landing and cut back landing joists to allow for cold air return vents, and cleaned out the sump pump and sump pit.
  • May 29, 2024 - Moved the primary bathroom tub from the backyard to inside the house, continued knee wall construction coming down the stairs, nailed the insulation boards between the front porch trusses and on the gable above the primary bedroom, put housewrap on the gable above the primary bedroom, insulated the bathroom walls that will be behind the tubs, installed OSB over bathroom wall insulation (after taking photos for Andrew), installed steps for the rear door porch, painted five sides of the SmartTrim material on sawhorses in the basement, painted six sides of SmartTrim material on sawhorses on the first floor, framed the kitchen wall for the microwave vent, installed the microwave vent cover/J-block, installed temporary handrails for the stairs, installed the attic baffles on the second floor, finished building and installing the stub wall in the kitchen, installed insulation drape on the basement walls, installed most of the J-blocks, installed the mounting board for the water manifold, adjusted the width of the door opening for the laundry closet and began sealing bottom plates with silicon caulk.
  • June 1, 2024 - Finished installation of siding J-blocks, installed SmartTrim for the electric meter, removed insulation board from end trusses of front porch and added housewrap, removed insulation board from rear porch beam/truss and added housewrap on the truss, installed Simpson Strongtie brackets to the bottom of the 4x4 legs on the MEP platform in the basement, positioned and nailed the strongbacks in both sets of floor trusses, installed drywall nailers in all wall connection ladders, almost finished painting SmartTrim, modified the dividing wall between the coat closet and pantry to accommodate the door frame and drywall, added 7/16” OSB to the inside of front and rear porch beams, installed safety boards where needed in stair areas, installed wall blocking for lower edge of the upper kitchen cabinets, install blocking for all stair hand rails, install blocking for towel bars, towel rings and toilet paper holders, moved the front steps from the front porch entrance to allow for concrete steps to be poured and install deadwood for baseboards.
  • June 5, 2024 - Moved the upstairs bathroom chase from the south wall to the north wall, added OSB to the upstairs bathroom west wall, removed the OSB from the upstairs bathroom south wall, added house wrap to the upstairs bathroom south wall, painted the brickmold for the exterior doors, finished painting the SmartTrim, removed the Lexan and hardware from the exterior doors, cut and installed door jamb extensions for both exterior doors, installed the brickmold on the exterior doors, re-installed the Lexan and hardware for the exterior doors, continued installing deadwood for baseboard trim, continued adding studs for drywall, continued caulking at the bottom of exterior wall bottom plates and between exterior wall top plates and cap plates and installed the attic baffles above the first floor bedroom, bathroom and laundry.
  • June 8, 2024 - Re-installed the back porch steps on the side which had been removed by the vinyl siding contractors, completed caulking at the bottom of exterior wall bottom plates and between exterior wall top plates and cap plates, completed deadwood for drywall and baseboards, cut some 2x4 cedar for the railing systems, painted some of the 2x4 cedar for the railing systems, hung F-channel on the front and rear porch beams, completed installing SmartTrim on the front porch beams and posts and almost completed installing SmartTrim on the rear porch beams and post.
  • June 15, 2024 - Finished the SmartTrim on the rear porch, removed the bottom two rows of siding, J-channel and starter strip at the back porch to accommodate pouring the back porch steps, caulked between all exterior vertical studs including king-jack studs, sealed doors and windows with window and door foam, sprayed firestop foam in all vertical penetrations at all wires, ducts and pipes, sprayed firestop foam behind all electrical boxes on exterior walls, air sealed the tub drain openings, continued construction of porch railing systems and swept up debris from the mechanical contractors.
  • June 18, 2024 - Nailed the cripples in the upstairs bedroom door headers, shortened the second floor stairwell wall length, hung insulation markers in the attics, painted the cedar 2x4's for the porch railing systems, painted the treated 4x4's for the porch step railing systems, delivered extra 2x4's and 1x6's to the Veteran Build site, sanded protruding edges on the SmartTrim on the porch posts where required, caulked the SmartTrim on both porches, painted over caulked SmartTrim on both porches, puttied the jamb extensions and brickmold around each exterior door, and cleared the perimeter of the basement and the first floor for Habitat staff to spray insulation in the floor joist cavities.
  • June 22, 2024 - Adjusted the insulation markers in the attics, completed construction of three porch railings, installed soffit for both porches, insulated all floor truss cavities with unfaced insulation, insulated the balloon wall in the stairwells with unfaced R-19 insulation and covered those walls with housewrap, and insulated all other exterior wall cavities with faced R-13 insulation.
  • June 26, 2024 - Installed OSB atop the second floor bathroom chase, spray foamed between the paired stairwell walls, hung all but one sheet of ceiling drywall in the upstairs bedrooms, their closets, hallway/stairwell and bathroom and hung all ceiling drywall in the living room, dining room, kitchen and rear entranceway area.
  • June 29, 2024 - Continued hanging ceiling drywall until we ran out of material, hung wall drywall in one and one-half upstairs bedrooms and their closets, installed the upstairs attic access panel, finished hanging drywall in the first floor bathroom, and hung wall drywall in about one-half of the living/dining/kitchen area.
  • July 2, 2024 - Re-installed the vinyl starter strip, J-channel and two rows of siding next to the rear porch steps, finished hanging ceiling drywall, installed the primary bedroom attic access panel, finished wall drywall in the upstairs three bedrooms and linen closet, continued hanging drywall in the living/dining/kitchen area and its associated closets and began hanging drywall in the upstairs hallway, upstairs bathroom and primary bedroom.
  • July 6, 2024 - Finished hanging drywall on the first and second floor walls, finished installing the front and rear porch railings, dug both post holes for the porch step railing posts, set the porch step railing posts, cut excess window foam away from the window openings and began to wrap the window openings with drywall.
  • July 10, 2024 - Finished hanging drywall in the house, finished wrapping the window openings with drywall, adjusted the OSB holding the Lexan on the first floor windows so that the wrapped window openings could be properly finished, performed a quality control on the setting of drywall screws, completed most of the front porch step railing, puttied nail holes in both porch railings, painted over puttied nail holes on both porch railings and moved tools/materials/benches/binder/etc. to the basement in preparation for the professional drywall finishers to begin tomorrow.
  • July 13, 2024 - Finished the front and rear porch step railings, shoveled and spread the gravel for the storage shed, built the deck and walls for the storage shed, raised the four shed walls and added cap plates to the shed walls.
  • July 16, 2024 - Viewed the professional drywall finishers progress and saw the lot being graded.
  • July 20, 2024 - Glued pocket screw plugs in the porch step railings, cut the brush down on both sides of the yard, almost finished insulating both attic spaces, built and raised the shed roof trusses, installed fascia boards for the shed roof, sheathed most of the shed roof and set two fence posts.
  • July 24, 2024 - Finished insulating both attic spaces, replaced the vinyl siding that was damaged by the Dingo last week, finished sheathing the shed roof, laid felt paper and installed drip edge on the shed roof, shingled about 80% of the shed roof, put housewrap on the shed, hung the front vinyl corner posts on the shed, continued setting fence posts until we exhausted the concrete mix, wiped down all interior walls, installed hurricane clips on the shed roof trusses, sanded OSB floor seams where necessary, vacuumed all floors and window openings of drywall and saw dust, rolled primer on the walls of two and one-half bedrooms and part of the upstairs hall, and cut in primer in two bedrooms.
  • July 27, 2024 - Finished shingling the shed roof, hung the rear vinyl corner posts and starter strips on the shed, began hanging vinyl siding on the shed, completed setting fence posts, began installing rails for the fence, completed putting primer on rooms on both floors and part of the stairwells, and began putting the first coat of paint on rooms on the second floor.
  • July 31, 2024 - Hung vinyl siding on the shed up to the gables, cut down one fence post to allow the dumpster to be moved outside the fenced area, continued installing rails for the fence, installed fence pickets from the northeast corner to the shed, completed priming all walls, rolled two coats of paint on all upstairs bedroom walls and most of the kitchen/living room/dining area walls, rolled one coat of paint on the other first floor walls except the closets, rolled one coat of paint on the primary stairwell, cut-in one coat of paint throughout the second floor, the primary stairwell and the kitchen/living room/dining area. Habitat also dug the conductor trenches for both sides of the house to the sidewalk.
  • August 3, 2024 - Installed fascia aluminum on the shed, almost finished the vinyl siding on the shed, set the replacement fence post, continued attaching pickets to the fence rails, finished rolling two coats of paint on all interior walls, finished cutting in two coats of paint on all upstairs interior walls and continued cutting in the first coat of paint on the first floor.
  • August 7, 2024 - Finished the vinyl siding on the shed, cut protruding nails off the fence rails, continued attaching pickets to the fence rails, almost finished interior wall painting, patched and painted some drywall anomalies, built and installed the south fence gate, added R-38 insulation to both attic access panels, installed basement window well extensions on both window wells and laid the eastern conductor line for the eastern downspouts and sump pump.
  • August 10, 2024 - Finished the interior wall painting, modified the south fence gate lock mechanism, put one coat of paint on all bedroom doors, all bedroom closet doors and all bathroom doors, built the north fence gate, completed the conductor lines, picked up rocks and installed the kitchen cabinets.
  • August 14, 2024 - Completed painting the interior doors on the second floor and master bedroom, applied at least one coat of paint on the remaining first floor doors, completed two coats of paint on all door casings, installed both bathroom vanities and set the sinks on them, finished the front section of fence, and cleaned and scraped the second floor floor in preparation for floor installation.
  • August 17, 2024 - Sanded the rough edges of the interior doors, almost finished painting all interior doors, re-assembled all upstairs interior doors in their frames, removed most of the rocks from the front yard, smoothed out the front yard, put two coats of paint on all baseboards and laid LVP flooring in 1 1/2 upstairs bedrooms.
  • August 21, 2024 - Finished the backyard fence, finished painting all interior doors, finished re-assembling all interior doors in their frames, moved unneeded tools and supplies out of the house for pick up by Habitat MidOhio, puttied, sanded and painted both porch step railings, cleaned the basement, installed the toe-kicks for the kitchen cabinets, installed the back panels for the kitchen island cabinet set, installed the countertop for the kitchen island cabinet, applied compound to drywall anomalies and laid more LVP flooring upstairs.
  • August 24, 2024 - Sanded and painted drywall anomalies, finished laying LVP flooring upstairs, cleaned all window frames upstairs and one downstairs, cleaned all windows upstairs, put two coats of gray paint on the shed floor, put two coats of paint on the main stairwell stringers, installed the toe kick in front of the upstairs vanity, put one coat of gray paint on the basement stairwell stringers, installed all interior doors upstairs except for the bathroom door and began laying LVP flooring downstairs.
  • August 28, 2024 - Patched some drywall anomalies, continued laying LVP flooring on the main floor, added toe kick and trim to primary bathroom vanity and began trimming interior doors.
  • August 31, 2024 - Set the kitchen countertop against the east wall, finished laying LVP flooring in the living room and area leading to the primary bedroom, laid most of the LVP flooring in the primary bedroom, finished installing doors upstairs, finished trimming doors upstairs, finished baseboards in the two north upstairs bedrooms and their closets, began installing baseboards in the south upstairs bedroom and both bathrooms, developed plans for the cap boards on the primary stairwell half-walls, installed the doors to the primary bedroom and primary bathroom and puttied more drywall anomalies.
  • September 4, 2024 - Finished installing interior doors, finished trim on the second floor, finished the LVP flooring in the house, started door casing on the first floor, moved the fan pull chains inside the fan lights as the fan and light are controlled by wall switches, replaced the broken fan blade arm in the second floor bedroom, put pea gravel underneath AC condenser pad outside, began filling nail holes on second floor and sprayed ROUND-UP on the poison ivy, vines and weeds around the entire perimeter of the lot.
  • September 7, 2024 - Finished door casing on all doors, installed the rolling door on the shed, continued to pick up rocks from the backyard, finished baseboard trim on the primary stairwell, linen closet, primary bedroom, primary bedroom closet and primary bathroom, almost finished filling nail holes and caulking seams on trim work on the second floor, repaired the disfigured dining area window, cleaned paint off the dining area window frame, installed the exterior door lock sets on both exterior doors, taped all but one cold air return covers, vacuumed the second floor, swept the first floor and installed baseboard on about three-quarters of the kitchen/dining/living area.
  • September 11, 2024 - Installed an accent wall on the basement stairwell landing, continued puttying nail holes and caulking seams on trim work, began painting over puttied and caulked trim work, continued installing baseboard and quarter-round, cleaned the downstairs window frames and began installing closet shelving.
  • September 14, 2024 - Continued puttying nail holes and caulking seams on trim work, continued painting over puttied and caulked trim work, finished installing baseboard throughout the house, finished installing quarter-round around the kitchen island cabinets, put polyurethane on the interior railing material, continued removing rocks from the back yard, sanded, caulked and put a first coat of paint on the exterior door jamb extensions, installed the kneewall caps for the main stairwell, installed all but two privacy and passage interior door sets and installed most door stops.
  • September 18, 2024 - Continued puttying nail holes and caulking seams on trim work, continued painting over puttied and caulked trim work, finished installing quarter-round throughout the house, continued removing rocks from the front yard, put second and third coats of paint on the exterior door jamb extensions, finished installing the door stops, finished taping around cold air returns, finished closet shelving, cut and installed most of the handrails for both staircases, laid all but one stepping stone in the back yard, patched more drywall anomalies, installed weatherstrip around both attic access openings and began installing cabinet pulls.
  • September 21, 2024 - Finished puttying nail holes and caulking seams on trim work, finished painting over puttied and caulked trim work, continued removing rocks from the front yard, finished installing the handrails for both staircases, laid the last stepping stone in the back yard, patched more drywall anomalies, finished installing cabinet pulls, finished installing interior door knob sets, painted over patched drywall anomalies, trimmed the base of all porch columns, re-installed the weather strips on the exterior doors, installed the microwave, finished the trim around the kitchen island, cut down the weeds in the east front yard, adjusted the kitchen cabinet doors, installed shoe moulding under the pony wall caps and installed the front door peephole.
  • September 25, 2024 - Finished removing rocks from the front and side yards, patched and painted more drywall anomalies, cut down the remaining weeds in the front yard, leveled the front and side yards in preparation for top soil delivery, installed the house numbers, mounted the mailbox, installed a door bell base for the potential of the homeowner adding a surveillance doorbell, vacuumed the entire house, mopped the Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring, installed all window blinds, painted two-thirds of the basement stairs, installed all bathroom accessories in both bathrooms, finished cleaning the upstairs windows, cleaned and installed the upstairs window screens, installed the kitchen side splash, cleaned the main stairwell in preparation for carpet installation, caulked the kitchen side splash and the bathroom vanity tops and moved excess materials and tools to the living room for removal by Habitat.
  • September 28, 2024 - Patched and painted more drywall anomalies, continued painting the basement stairs, vacuumed the new carpet on the primary stairs, laid carpet protector on the carpet, moved excess materials, steel boxes and tools to the Habitat box truck, vacuumed the newly cleared areas in the basement, vacuumed the first floor window sills, finished cleaning the bathroom vanities, tubs, kitchen sink, countertops and cabinets, cleaned the exterior doors with Magic Eraser, pressure washed both porches, both railing systems, the sidewalk, the house siding where needed and the shed siding where needed and applied "Squirt & Mop" to the LVP flooring upstairs, in the primary bedroom and bathroom, in the laundry area and in the coat closet/pantry area.
  • October 2, 2024 - Finished painting the basement stairs, installed a threshold at the top of the stairs where the carpet meets the LVP flooring, caulked the knee wall cap plate, planted the shrubs and mums in front of the front porch and spread mulch.
  • October 8, 2024 - Adjusted the front gate latch, spread topsoil, spread grass seed and raked the grass seed into the topsoil.
  • November 16, 2024 - Adjusted the front gate latch, pressure washed the front porch, walkway and sidewalk, installed the dishwasher, oven and refrigerator, removed the Lexan from the windows and doors, patched and put a first coat of paint on the exterior door frames, cleaned the windows, re-installed the window screens, touched up paint throughout the house, caulked the escutcheon ring in the primary bathroom, adjusted one bedroom closet door, sealed the outside penetration for the sump pump, cleaned out the kitchen drawers and did a final sweep and "swiffer" of the LVP flooring.
  • November 17, 2024 - Put second coat of paint on the exterior door frames and painted the basement steps marred by the inspector.
  • November 20, 2024 - Held the Dedication Ceremony.
